The Past in the Present. Colonialism in Scientific Research Collaboration

Die Autorinnen dieses Beitrags problematisieren, wie koloniale Machtverhältnisse die Produktion historischen Wissens bis heute prägen und sich besonders in wissenschaftlichen Forschungskooperationen zwischen Globalem Norden und Globalem Süden fortsetzen. Sie zeigen auf, wie Narrative der «Zivilisierungsmission» fortwirken, während die Perspektiven und Arbeitsleistungen von Wissenschaftler*innen aus dem Globalen Süden weiterhin marginalisiert bleiben. Am Beispiel moderner Forschungspraktiken weist der Beitrag auf ungleiche Autor*innenschaft, epistemische Gewalt, rassifizierte Rollenverteilungen und intellektuelle Extraktion hin. Er argumentiert, dass viele Kooperationen neokoloniale Strukturen reproduzieren und ruft zu einer tiefgreifenden Dekolonisierung akademischer Wissensproduktion auf, in der nicht-westliche Perspektiven Forschungsfragen, Methoden und Interpretationen massgeblich bestimmen.

English abstract

The authors of this article raise the issue of how colonial power relations continue to shape the production of historical knowledge to this day, and persist particularly in academic research collaborations between the Global North and the Global South. They draw attention to how narratives of the ‘civilising mission’ continue to exert influence, whilst the perspectives and contributions of scholars from the Global South remain marginalised. Using the example of modern research practices, the article points to unequal authorship, epistemic violence, racialised role distributions and intellectual extraction. It argues that many collaborations reproduce neocolonial structures and calls for a profound decolonisation of academic knowledge production, in which non-Western perspectives play a decisive role in shaping research questions, methods and interpretations.
